Foundation's
first donation supports bone marrow drive for fatally-sick child
DUBLIN,
CA, September 24, 1999--The Markie Foundation, in partnership
with Assumption School in San Leandro, California, today made
its first contribution, donating $1,300 to help subsidize the
"Reach Out for Romie" Bone Marrow Drive.
Roman
Perkins (pictured at right) of Pleasanton, California, suffers
from a fatal disease called MPS Hurlers I (Mucopolysaccharidosis).
According to doctors, "Romie" will die by the age of five without
a successful bone marrow transplant. The Perkins family is holding
a bone marrow drive on November 6, 1999, in hopes of finding a
perfect match. The
family, whose goal is to test 1000 individuals, is raising money
to cover costs of the drive.
The
Markie Foundation agreed to match $300 raised by the Fifth Grade
Bake Sale at Assumption School earlier this month, then donated
an additional $1000 towards the family's cause.
"We
are grateful for the efforts of The Markie Foundation and especially
the fifth graders at Assumption School," said Shawna Perkins,
Roman's mother. "We are so touched receiving this kind of
love and support for Roman."
"This
is an excellent opportunity for The Markie Foundation to help
make a difference in the life of a sick child and to assist a
family in need," said Janis Wuelfing, co-founder of The Markie
Foundation and teacher at Assumption School. "We are very happy
that our first donation supports such a purposeful cause. Our
prayers and support will continue to be with Roman and his family."
